Sylvia Baker de Perkal

For many years, art formed part of Sylvia’s life as a natural way to see the world. As a child she used to draw everyday scenes and invented pictorial stories; later she attended courses on art history and regularly visited exhibitions, where her eye would capture and store the myriad images, colours and atmospheres that would later find their way from her hand to the canvas.

In 2019, after having taken part in a creativity workshop in Palma, this silent relationship with art took a new direction. What had hitherto been a constant but discreet presence began to take shape and to follow its own creative path.

Painting provided her with her very own space of freedom: one where she could always start over. Every blank canvas became a chance to leave the past behind and start afresh, free of burdens or expectations. If a work does not seem to find its way, it can be transformed, converted into something new, reborn time and again. It is in the spirit of ‘starting over’ that her painting has found its language: a layered construction where everything can always be changed, obliterated or reconfigured into something completely new.

Some creative paths begin well before we begin to travel along them.

Since then, Sylvia has developed artwork that is highly intuitive and intimately connected with nature. Flowers, plants, landscapes and organic elements are recurring themes in her work, where colour and layers of texture reflect, through her brushstrokes, the movement and vitality that so define her.

Sylvia’s goal is to paint perceptions of nature full of colour and texture to bring joy, harmony and warmth to spaces. Her pieces seek to enhance everyday life, add light, soften a space or turn a wall into a welcome and pleasant visual pause.

As well as something to look at, her work is created to share the spaces with those who inhabit them, making interiors feel a little more alive, happier or more peaceful. Through her art, Sylvia hopes to share with others the joy she feels in its creation.

Her work has grown organically through commissions, collaborations with interior designers and projects for unique spaces. Every new piece forms part of a process in constant evolution, where curiosity, experimentation and the chance to start over continue to open new paths and expand new horizons.

In her studio

Sylvia’s artwork is all about colour and texture. She works principally with acrylic paint, as its immediacy and fast drying time make it ideal for her painting style: agile, intuitive and spontaneous or, as she describes it, with lots of “bursts of energy”.

She also uses collage in many of her works. The richness of wallpaper and printed paper add texture to the backgrounds of many of her paintings. Sometimes she makes papier maché to shape and sculpt her flowers.

In her collection of palm trees, Sylvia has applied inks in various tones, as well as rusted iron shavings, which enhance the organic feel of the pieces.

The choice of materials for each work forms part of a process that has more to do with instinct than thought. Her studio is filled with boxes, drawers and baskets overflowing with paper, varnishes, gels and gold, copper and silver leaf: materials that feed and enrich the creative process.

"I invite you to visit my studio, a very special place where I paint, experiment and create each of my works.
Colour, textures and materials- the happy companions of my creative process- inhabit this happy space with me. Call me to arrange a visit.
